Chemistry Lab 1

-------->(This is copper II sulfate before it is dissolved in water.)

On Friday we did our first lab on the ionic bonds with copper II sulfate and water.  We used 20mg of copper II sulfate and mixed it with 100mg of water.  The copper II sulfate crystals started to dissolve into the water and the water turned blue.

We used the copper II sulfate and mixed it with water to see if the copper II sulfate would dissolve into the water.  The copper II sulfate dissolved into the water and the water turned blue and it looked like kool-aid and looked like it would be good to drink.

After all of the copper II sulfate dissolved into the water we put a strip of zinc into the solution.  The zinc attracted all of the copper and then it started turning black.  It looked kind of gross.  When we took the zinc strip out of the solution you could see the copper sticking to the strip of zinc.  The zinc was more reactive than the copper so it stole its protons and changed its charge so then the copper was attracted to the zinc.  We washed off the zinc stick and then took all of the stuff from our beakers and ran it through a funnel with filter paper in it.  All of the copper was left in the filter and we took it out and put on a watch glass.  Today we looked at it and it was dried out and it looked sort of like dirt.

I had a lot of fun doing the lab.  I liked stirring the solution and then observing the zinc strip.  I also had fun filtering the the copper II sulfate and water.  The lab was fun and I also learned about the copper II sulfate and how it is attracted to the zinc strip.  I thought that it was very interesting how the zinc stole the charge of the copper and that all of the copper was attracted to the zinc strip.

Dear Mr. Kutz, I do not know where that black box is coming from.
